Q: I am a disabled retiree, under age 65, and I have Medicare Parts A & B. Even though I am not 65, can I still join one of the new Medicare Advantage plans that cost only $7.50 and $15 per person? What about medical coverage for my spouse who is not on Medicare?
A: The Medicare Advantage plans are for Medicare-covered employees, retirees, and their dependents, regardless of age, who have Medicare Parts A & B, are covered under a city medical plan, live in the plan’s service area, and do not have end-stage renal disease. While the benefits are very similar to, and sometimes better than, the HMO, each person should carefully evaluate whether the plans are appropriate for them. Eligible active employees are not required to enroll before they stop working. For 2005, the Medicare monthly cost is $78.20.
You may maintain HMO or PPO medical coverage for your dependent who does not join a Medicare Advantage plan. |
