New discount programs offer $4 and $5 generic prescriptions.
Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, H-E-B and Target pharmacies are offering a 30-day supply of hundreds of commonly prescribed generic drugs and drug compounds in varying doses for $4 or $5.
The generic copayment for all city plans is $10. With the new discount programs, an additional savings of $5 to $6 per prescription is possible.
Generics include antibiotic, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol lowering, antidepressant and allergy medications among others.
Wal-Mart introduced the program in September with a list of $4 generic drugs. Discounted generics are available at 415 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club pharmacies across Texas. Their current list of 314 discounted drugs comprises about 10 percent of the available generic drugs on the U.S market.
Drug orders and refills may be placed through Wal-Mart online pharmacies for pickup in stores. Click here for a complete listing of $4 generics. Arkansas, Arizona and New Mexico are among the 26 other states participating in the program.
H-E-B jumped on board with a similar plan in October. All H-E-B pharmacies offer a 30-day supply from a list of 500 prescription generics at $5 each. H-E-B customers need to sign up for the “My H-E-B Pharmacy Rewards” card. There is no cost for the Rx rewards card, and members will enjoy priority scheduling for H-E-B Pharmacy services, access to free health screenings, educational information, as well as a free copy of H-E-B’s magazine for health living, which will be mailed to their homes. For more information, call (866) 286-8098. Click here for a complete list of their discounted generic medications.
The $4 generic drug prescription program is also available in all Target stores with pharmacies in Texas and 46 other states. Click here for a list of available $4 medications..
