Don’t discount these fun activities because of the price

Looking for something to do? How about taking in a basketball game or a ballet? How about a good play, or checking out the latest exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science – at nearly half price?
In honor of Public Servuce Recognition Week in May, the Rockets, the Houston Ballet, Theater Under The Stars and the museum, among others, are offering discounted tickets to city employees. You have no reason to be bored anymore. For more information, visit www.houstontx.gov/hr/psrwpages/sports.htm.

See our homes
The Fire Department is hosting open houses at its stations throughout the year. Smoke detectors and fire safety information are given away at the open houses, which feature balloons, Captain Elmo the fire safety robot, and more for children. For dates, visit www.houstonfire.org.

Counting the ways courts contribute
Municipal Courts will celebrate the contributions of the court system during Municipal Courts Week Nov. 5-9. Municipal courts protect the community’s peace and dignity by enforcing local ordinances and state offenses punishable by fines only.

Spend an evening at the library
Each month, the Houston Public Library presents “An Evening with…,” an ongoing series that brings well-known authors to local libraries. Authors read from their books, answer audience questions, and talk about their inspirations. All events are free and open to the public. On Nov. 5, Los Angeles Times columnist Gregory Rodriguez will read from “Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans & Vagabonds: Mexican Immigration and the Future of Race in America” at the McGovern-Stella Link branch.

Raise them up reading
During Children’s Book Week Nov. 12-18, parents are encouraged to “Rise Up Reading!” with their children. Local libraries will have free events for children and their parents to enjoy together. For more information, visit www.houstonlibrary.org.

Fill your gas tank during cooler morning or evening hours to cut down on fuel evaporation. Avoid spilling the gas and don’t “top off” the tank, as this allows more air into your tank, resulting in a decrease in gas mileage. Replace the gas tank cap tightly, and try to use gas stations that have vapor-recovery nozzles, those black, accordion-looking plastic devices attached to the nozzle. Those nozzles cutdown on vapors that are released as you fill up your car.
