Important reminder
Elected city officials, executive-level employees, and the city attorney are required by city statute to file a financial disclosure statement or a personal financial statement with the city secretary’s office before May 1. The filing period covers Oct. 1, 2004, through Dec. 31, 2005. The financial disclosure form is available on CHOICE.net. Also, each department director has a template of the online form to distribute to affected employees.
Now, on to the fun and games
In recognition of Public Service Recognition Week May 1-7, local sporting teams, including the Houston Astros and the Houston Dynamo, are offering city employees discounted tickets to select games. A hot class
The Fire Department is taking names for the September citizens’ fire academy. For more information, call (713) 495-7906 or email alicia.whitehead@cityofhouston.net.
New Web site is flying high
Aviation has a new Web site, www.fly2houston.com, that lets travelers and clients check flight information, access maps, read airport news stories and watch “Houston Airports Today,” a public education TV show. Also, site visitors can download flight information onto their cell phone or Blackberry, allowing them to check departure and arrival times wherever they are.
It’s better than watching the same episode of “Friends” for the ninth time
Take some time to show how much you love the library by volunteering. Volunteers help enhance library services and programs while learning more about the library. For more information, call

Branching out with more hours
To better serve the community during the central library’s renovation, the library has extended hours at the Collier, Henington-Alief, Park Place, and Scenic Woods branches. For more information, call (832) 393-1313 or visit www.houstonlibrary.org.
One naturally leads to another
The Fire Department will host several events during Arson Awareness Week May 7-13. Other events in recognition of Emergency Medical Services Week are May 14-20. Visit www.houstontx.gov/fire for details.
Celebrate good times
The city will celebrate two upcoming holidays. The Memorial Day celebration is noon-3 p.m. May 29 at Veterans Memorial Park, 1986 Tidwell Road. Councilman Adrian Garcia and Channel 2 anchor Bill Balleza will host the festivities, which include games, clowns, balloon artists, live music and military displays.
The city salutes America with its July 4 Chevy’s Freedom Over Texas, featuring four stages of live concerts, a kid’s zone with rides and games, sand volleyball, and patriotic displays. And, of course, fireworks with choreographed music to end the celebration. At the Eleanor Tinsley Park, gates open at 4 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for 9:30-10 p.m. Tickets cost $6 for adults, $5 in advance from Fiesta. Children 10 and under are free.
