A life without a cause is a life without effect
For the first time, Combined Municipal Campaign donations can be made online when the CMC returns for its 16th year in late August. Those without computer access will get a paper form for their donations.

The CMC agency fair is 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at 611 Walker. Many of the charities you support with CMC donations will have booths at the fair. Representatives will provide information about their mission, and many will have giveaways. Also, you can buy an inexpensive lunch. For more information, contact Julie Keeton, (713) 837-9384, or visit
www.houstoncmc.org.

A day for medals
The Fire Department’s Medal Day Ceremony will be Oct. 28 at the Westchase Houston Marriott, 2900 Briarpark Dr. This ceremony honors firefighters for their dedication, achievements and valor. Additional details and ticket information are available at www.houstonfire.org.

Books on the Bayou – one city, a few books
Each September and October, the Books on the Bayou program brings Houstonians together by presenting one selection for everyone to read and discuss. This year, Books on the Bayou presents four titles to encourage not just adults, but also teens and young children to read. The titles focus on families with members facing disabilities or special needs. October is National Disability Awareness Month.

The primary title for adults and older teens is “Riding the Bus with My Sister,” by Rachael Simon. Other selected titles are:

“Tangerine” by Edward Bloor and “So B. It” by Sarah Weeks for elementary to intermediate-middle school students.

“Leo, the Late Bloomer” by Robert Kraus for preschool and read-aloud children.

HPL will present events and book discussion groups Sept. 8-Oct. 28. For more details, call (832) 393-1313.

Ahora en español
The George R. Brown Convention Center has added a Spanish-language version of its Web site. A new feature will also allow users greater access to facility information.

The Spanish translation mirrors the English version and provides facility information for meeting planners, exhibitors, attendees and Houston visitors. The added “opt-in” feature lets visitors register to receive GRB news and information by e-mail.

Both features are accessible through www.houstonconventionctr.com.

Citizens’ Fire Academy
The 13th Citizens’ Fire Academy begins in September. The citizen’s academy, which is not the actual firefighter/EMT academy, increases understanding of fire and emergency medical operations and promotes citizen interaction with firefighters and paramedics. Applications will be available through August by calling (713) 495-7906, or by e-mail, alicia.whitehead@cityofhouston.net.

Getting teens actively reading
This year’s theme for Teen Read Week Oct.15-21 is “Get Active @ your Library.” Programs will encourage teens to use library resources to lead active lives and to find books on sports, volunteerism, activism, college preparation and more. Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association. For more information, call (832) 393-1313.

Fire Fest
Fire Fest will be Oct. 21 at the Val Jahnke Training Academy, 8030 Braniff. The free event will feature live demonstrations, vendors, displays and fun activities for the family. For more information, visit www.houstonfire.org.
