On June 8, Deborah McAbee and Gary Dzierlenga, Legal, made a presentation titled, “Who Ya’ Gonna Call at the City of Houston?” at the Real Estate Law Conference at South Texas College of Law.
Lone Star Award, but not a lonely one
For the second consecutive year, City Savvy was named best public relations newsletter in Texas at the Houston Press Club’s annual Lone Star Awards banquet. City Savvy is written by Dave Schafer and John Perry and designed by publications manager Leslie Denton-Roach.
The Human Resources Web site also took first place in the Lone Star Awards as the best public relations Web site in the state. Perry also took third place PR Communicator of the Year.
An award to park on parking management’s shelf
Parking management, a Convention & Entertainment Facilities division, was named Municipal Parking Organization of the Year by the International Parking Institute. Nominees were selected for innovation, customer service, reliability, reputation, and strength of programs.
Maybe they should rename it the Colvard Award
Michelle Colvard, executive director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, received The Jefferson Award in recognition of volunteer service to citizens with disabilities while serving as chair of the Houston Commission on Disabilities. Colvard partnered with the Houston Parks & Recreation Department to help people with disabilities have better access to parks and recreational services. She co-hosted the first and second annual health and wellness town hall meetings and served on the Playgrounds Without Limits Committee, a fundraising collaboration with the Houston Parks Board.
A job worthy of Bob the Builder
Texas Building Branch Associated General Contractors presented Building Services’ design and construction division with an Outstanding Construction Award for the renovation of HPD’s Westside command station, which features the city’s first green roof.
Developing a reputation for great service
On April 29, Donald Sampley, assistant director, Housing & Community Development, received a special award from Goldberg B’nai B’rith Towers in appreciation of HCDD’s staff enhancing the residents’ quality of life. Then, on June 1, Dena Gray received an award from A Caring Safe Place Inc. in recognition of the department’s 10 years of dedication and support.
No need for a hard hat around these guys
At its annual awards luncheon, the Texas chapter of the National Safety Council recognized eight Public Works & Engineering employees. Tony Monk received a merit award for 15 years as a safe worker. Stephen Telus, Bennie Henton, Rickie Smith, Mona Ageitos, and Albert Lenton were honored as safe workers for 10 years. Clarence McCardell and Pascual Herrera received awards of achievement for 10 years of safe driving.
100 is the club’s name, not the number of winners
The 100 Club honored nine employees with its annual Heroes Awards. Recognized as police officers of the year were Sgts. Erin Musick and Robert Calderon Jr., and officers Troy Buchanan, David Nieto, and Robert Price. Firefighters of the year were Capts. Russell Harris and Jeffrey Chaffin, and firefighter Calvin Thomas. Chief E.A. Corral received a lifetime achievement award.
HoustonOne is number one
The Computerworld Honors Program recognized HoustonOne, the city’s ERP-implementation team, as a Laureate. The magazine’s program honors individuals and organizations that have used information technology to benefit society. HoustonOne integrated the new SAP software into the enterprise reporting program the city uses to manage its business and employees.
