The wait is over
Central Library is open for service. Come visit the improved library and enjoy a vibrant environment with access to entertainment, education and information. The library, open from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1 - 5 p.m. Sundays, has free wireless access and laptops for use within the library. People with disabilities can come HERE for resources
On Sept. 18, the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and a host of community partners are sponsoring the second-annual Housing, Employment and Resources Expo for People with Disabilities at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Hall E. The expo allows people with disabilities to meet with prospective employers and representatives from housing and other agencies and participate in housing and employment workshops. Attendees will also receive help with their resume and interviewing skills. For more information, visit www.houstonhereexpo.org.
Children’s book sale
The Friends of the Houston Public Library’s children’s book sale is 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Aug. 8 and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at Central Library, 500 McKinney.
An assortment of fiction and nonfiction materials for children and teens will be arranged according to subject. Most books can be bought for $1 or $2. Checks, cash and credit cards will be accepted.
Free FireFest
The 2008 FireFest, also known as the Fire Muster, will be 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Houston Fire Department’s training academy, 8030 Braniff. This fun-filled event is open to the public. Admission and parking are free. For more information, visit www.houstonfiremuseum.org.
The city that reads together stays together
Each September and October, Books on the Bayou: Houston Reads Together brings Houstonians together by presenting a novel for everyone to read and discuss. This year’s book is “Ellen Foster,” by Kaye Gibbons. The program runs Sept. 8 through Oct. 28. Houstonians can check out the book at their local libraries. Medal Day ceremony
Fire’s annual Medal Day ceremony is 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Marriott Westchase, 2900 Briarpark. The ceremony honors firefighters for their dedication, service and valor. Tickets can be bought by Fire employees and their friends and families. For more information, visit www.houstonfire.org.
Celebrate Hispanic heritage
From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the Houston Public Library will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with free programs and activities at neighborhood libraries and the Central Library.
