Human Resources communications took four awards at the Houston Press Club’s Lone Star Awards, which recognize the state’s best media and public relations pieces.

Dave Schafer won first and second place, PR article. He won first place for the story “Paper Houses provides solid support across the border,” which appeared in the 2008 CMC Tribute, and second place for “Working today can ea$e your tomorrow” in the Winter 2007 issue of Benefits Pulse.

Schafer also won third-place PR Communicator of the Year. Benefits Pulse won second place, PR newsletter. Benefits Pulse is designed by publications manager Leslie Denton-Roach.


In case of emergency, they’re experts

Terry Moore, Administration & Regulatory Affairs deputy emergency management coordinator; Sharon Nalls, ARA emergency management coordinator; and James Palmer, ARA assistant deputy emergency management coordinator were approved as certified emergency managers by the International Association of Emergency Managers. They passed an exam and reached benchmarks in experience, references, education, training and contributions to the profession to earn the CEM designation.


State Bar brings the Gavel Award down on Mejia

Presiding Judge Berta Mejia became the first female recipient of the Michael L. O’Neal Gavel Award. The award is presented annually to a municipal court judge who has displayed exceptional leadership within the State Bar of Texas Municipal Court Judge’s Section or has achieved special recognition as a leader in issues affecting municipal courts. Mejia was selected for her outstanding service to the people of Texas. The Municipal Judges Section chairman stated Mejia has done an outstanding job organizing the judiciary and ensuring a fair and efficient court. Mejia is also the first recipient from South Texas.

The July issue of Family Tree Magazine listed Library’s Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research as one of the “nine libraries to visit before you die” because of its outstanding collection and resources.


Parking another award in her cabinet
Liliana Rambo, General Services assistant director for parking management, was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the Texas Parking Association. Rambo was recognized for her significant and influential contributions to the parking industry in Texas.


She’s committed to the committee

Michaela Watson, children’s librarian at Oak Forest Neighborhood Library, was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Siddie Joe Johnson Award Committee for the Children’s Round Table of the Texas Library Association. The committee annually selects the Texas children’s librarian to receive the award for exemplary work.

Two Houston police officers and four firefighters were honored in the annual 100 Club Heroes Awards. Officer Suzanne Hollifield was recognized as officer of the year and Officer Craig Kivela was named super cop.

Firefighters Brad Ascenzi, Shane Horsted, Javier Benavides and Sacha Masson were recognized as firefighters of the year.


Compensated for doing great work

The Texas Department of Insurance’s division of workers’ compensation designated Houston as a high performer after a recent assessment. The high performer status, the highest designation, was based on the city’s outstanding performance processing medical bills on time, the timeliness of benefits payments, and the low number of contested cases.
