Hybrids provide relief from gas prices
Q. What is the city doing to offset the rising cost of gas? Can we work four-day work weeks?
A. To help deal with rising fuel costs, the city has acquired 546 hybrid vehicles, including Toyota Prius and Ford Escape hybrid models that are 50 percent more fuel efficient than regular models. In addition, the city has two hybrid-diesel dump trucks that are 30 percent more fuel efficient than conventional dump trucks. Two hybrid solid waste side-loaders will be delivered next year.
City departments regularly review and amend their take-home vehicle assignments, reducing take-home vehicles by 9 percent among civilian departments.
The best way for employees to offset the rising cost of fuel is to use mass transit. The city provides downtown employees with a METRO transit pass with free access to all METRO lines.
City departments may implement flex work schedules wherever they are feasible. Many employees work schedules other than 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some work four days per week; some work 80 hours in nine work days. Talk to your supervisor if you are interested in a flexible schedule. Your director will determine if it would impact your department’s delivery of services to customers.
