Three cheers
Three Building Services projects received merit awards for excellence in construction from The Associated Builders and Contractors at the 2006 Excellence in Construction Most Valuable Players Ceremony. The winning projects were the HPD Westside Command Center renovation, Jones Hall projection, and the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center. Judges cited the complexity of the command center renovation, which features the city’s first vegetative roof, recycled glass paving, and drought-tolerant planting.
Topper-most newsletter
City Savvy was named Best Internal Newsletter – Corporate/Nonprofit Communications in a six-state region by the Dallas Press Club at the annual Katie Awards. Dave Schafer and John Perry write Savvy and Leslie Denton-Roach designs it.
In June, City Savvy was named the state’s best public relations newsletter by the Houston Press Club.
Media darlings
Issa Dadoush, Building Services director, and Calvin Curtis, contracts manager, were featured in the October 2006 issue of ABODE Magazine, a publication of the Houston Apartment Association. In the article, Dadoush and Curtis discussed the Hurricane Katrina housing effort one year later and the public-private partnership between the city and the Houston Apartment Association.
Turfgrass master
At the Texas Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show, Joe Pierucci, Parks & Recreation, received the designation Master Certified Professional Turf Manager by the Texas Turfgrass Association. This honor from his peers recognizes his years of experience, education, and dedication.
Raising the bar on environmental law
Legal’s Ceil Price was a presenter at the Houston Bar Association’s seminar Jan. 11. Her presentation, “Environmental Law: A Municipal Perspective,” gave an overview of state and federal environmental laws and described how those laws affect city operations.
Upon closer inspection, it’s a winner
At the annual Texas Municipal Leagues Convention in Austin, Public Works & Engineering’s building inspection division won the Best Practices Award for its TeleWork Inspection program. The program utilizes a wireless inspection system. The Building Officials Association of Texas presented the award.
Playing good defense
Human Resources’ and Public Works and Engineering’s training classes for the defensive driving course were named Texas’ best performers by the National Safety Council. The award is given to the training program that strives for excellence in the improvement of students’ driving skills. Minerva Alba manages the HR program. Bobby Hawkins, James Garza, Olen Lewis are instructors. Gary Boyd manages the PWE program, and Alvaro Diaz, Greg Carter, Arnita Pitts and David Richards are instructors.
This’ll put him on the map
Ed Solis, Public Works & Engineering, took home three awards at the Houston Area Geographic Information System Day event in November. He won ribbons for Best Analytical Presentation, first place Most Popular, and second place Most Popular for maps he submitted in the Map Gallery Competition.
