Mapping out an award winner
Larry Nierth, Planning & Development, won first place in the Best Analytical Presentation category of the ESRI International Map Gallery Competition. More than 1,000 maps were submitted for competition in several categories. Nierth created a map set featuring all contaminated sites in the city. ESRI cartographers critiqued the maps at the conference.

And they honor his service
Fire engineer operator Thanh Nguyen was recognized at the Organization of Chinese Americans Greater Houston’s ninth-annual “They Serve With Honor” awards gala. Nguyen was honored for his professionalism and commitment to community service.

Sitting in the think tank
Rhea Brown Lawson, Library director, was invited to serve as chair of the Capacity Building Strategy Group, the Urban Libraries Council’s think tank. She will lead the national group through July 2009.

Lawyer by day, writer by night
Tom Allen, Legal, had an article, “Mediation’s Most Dangerous Hour,” published in the July/August edition of Houston Lawyer magazine.

What, no Pulitzer?
Human Resources’ communications division was honored with numerous awards by two national writing organizations. Benefits Pulse won an APEX Award of Excellence from the Writing that Works newsletter for overall newsletter writing. Extra Milers won an Award of Excellence in the Newsletters – Web and Electronic category. Dave Schafer won an Award of Excellence in the Writing Series category for his series of stories on HPD cadets, and Leslie Denton-Roach won an Award of Excellence in the Design and Layout category for City Savvy.

In the Magnum Opus awards, presented by McMurry Inc. and the Missouri School of Journalism, communications won Gold Awards for Best Feature Article for “Paper Houses provides solid support across the border” in the 2008 CMC Tribute, Best Series of Articles for the HPD cadet series that ran in the Summer 2007 through Spring 2008 issues of City Savvy, and Best Overall Design for City Savvy. Silver Awards were given for Best Regular Feature for “A Day on the Job” in City Savvy, and Best Overall Design for City Savvy.

The article “Working today can ea$e your tomorrow,” which ran in the Winter 2007 Benefits Pulse, won Bronze Awards for Best Public Service Article and Best Feature Design. Extra Milers also won a Bronze Award for Best Overall Design.

Benefits Pulse and Extra Milers won Honorable Mentions for Best Overall Editorial, and the article “We’ve got talent, yes we do,” printed in the Spring 2007 City Savvy won Honorable Mention for Best Feature Article. Extra Milers won Special Recognition in the Grand Awards competition for Electronic Publication.

Showing his spirit
City Attorney Arturo Michel was honored at a benefit luncheon by the Mexican American Bar Association for leadership abilities that exemplify the Hispanic pioneer spirit in service to Texas and beyond.

Leading the effort against lead poisoning
Brenda Reyes, Health & Human Services bureau chief, Community and Children’s Environmental Health, was appointed to the advisory committee on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Reyes will help the committee provide advice and guidance to the U.S. secretary of Health & Human Services and the CDC director to reduce the country’s incidence and prevalence of childhood lead poisoning.

Ike heroes
Police officer Larry Carwell and Mayor Bill White were spotlighted in a Houston Chronicle series on Hurricane Ike heroes for their efforts after the hurricane. Carwell was lauded for coaxing traffic trough a complicated four-way intersection without signals at Shepherd and Kirby about 20 minutes before rush hour. Officers Michael Dykens, Aaron Rodriguez and Andrew Alvarado also worked the intersection.
