We asked employees: What do you do to
protect the environment?
Karl Pepple, Mayor’s Office:
“I just do the usual: We take advantage of the curbside recycling program, take public transit, buy wind power, use a programmable thermostat so we use less electricity when we’re not home, and buy energy star appliances when we replace an appliance. Also, instead of buying a second car, we bought my wife an emissions-friendly scooter that gets 97 miles a gallon.”
Thomas McWhorter,
Planning & Development:
“I’m an avid recycler of paper, plastic, glass and cardboard.”
Earl Disiere,
Solid Waste Management:
“I inform everyone who will listen about the saving to be had by using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs. The average reported savings is $50 to $80 off an electric bill.”
Teresa Geisheker,
Planning & Development:
“I live simply and am mindful of what I use. I ask myself, ‘Is this consumption really important for my quality of life, or can I not use it up and let it be available for someone else?’”
Dixie Mullins,
Information Technology:
“I recycle everything I can, and I limit the use of paper products I use. I combine trips to save gas, I turn off appliances when I’m not using them – including lights in rooms I’m not in, I use fluorescent bulbs, and I raise the temperature in my house when I’m gone.”
Lilly Warden,
Municipal Courts Judicial:
“Our son has carpooled to school with kids in our neighborhood for four years. We recycle water bottles by washing them well in hot water and refilling them from a bigger bottle. These refilled bottles go back into the refrigerator for another round or two.”
