HOUSTON RANKS 5th IN 2001 DIGITAL CITIES SURVEY Center for Digital Government Recognizes City of Houston’s Outstanding Achievement in Technology
Dear Houston,
We have worked hard during the last year to improve our technology services for all our citizens. I’m proud to say our efforts have paid off with national recognition.
Sponsored by TekInsight, the 2001 Digital Cities Survey examined how city governments have progressed in adopting and utilizing digital technologies to improve the delivery of services to their citizens.
Mayors, chief information officers and city managers at over 300 of the nation’s cities were invited to participate. The survey grouped cities into three categories based on population: More than 250,000, 125,000-250,000, and 75,000-125,000.
This summer we unveiled SimHouston, a suite of virtual desktop software applications that allows every citizen of Houston to have access to the Internet; to create, modify, store and send documents; and to have an email address, all at no cost to the user.
Making technology available to every citizen, no matter what their socio-economic situation, has been a long-held dream of mine, and Houston has become the first city in America to bridge the digital divide. To access this free City service, go to any of our public libraries, and our nationally-recognized advancements in technology will be at your fingertips!
