Assistant City Attorney, General Counsel Division
The City of Houston is seeking a dynamic, qualified, hardworking municipal attorney to work in the newly reorganized General Counsel Division. Attorneys in this division prepare ordinances and Code amendments, especially in response to City Council Committee initiatives. Other duties include direct interface with elected officials and administrative staff, preparation of legal opinions, and advice and counsel on general municipal law issues. This division is also responsible for responding to ethics issues, MWDBE questions, constitutional law issues, and interpretation of the sign code.
Applicants should be a member of the State Bar of Texas and have a working knowledge of basic municipal law principles; three years experience in the practice of municipal law is preferred. The Land Use Division of the City of Houston Legal Department has an opening for a paralegal.
This person will assist an environmental attorney who drafts ordinances regulating pollution and other similar environmental matters. The attorney works closely with the several operating departments, including the Department of Public Works and Engineering, as well as the Mayor's Office of Environmental Programming, to enforce ordinances and environmental laws, as well as advise on other regulatory matters. The paralegal hired for this position will assist the attorney by contacting clients, conducting research, maintaining files and performing other duties as requested. To be selected, a candidate must have good research, writing and word processing skills, and work well in a large organization. Environmental experience would be a plus. Years of experience: 1-2.
Salary is dependent on experience.
