March 2, 2007 -- Mayor Bill White, newly appointed Director Richard Celli and Interim Director David Mincberg, both of the Housing and Community Development Department, along with other city officials will join community leaders and members of the organization Indian Americans of Greater Houston for the ceremonial laying of foundation stone at the India House. The event marks the beginning of construction on the facility to be located at 8888 West Bellfort near Gessner. This dedication ceremony is slated for Saturday, March 3, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
"This is a great day for all of Houston as we celebrate this community center that will serve as a gathering place for many generations. I applaud the efforts of all who have made this day possible," said Mayor Bill White.
The India House Community Center is expected to be completed in February 2008. It will feature a state-of-the-art, 29,000-square-foot building offering services to include: senior & youth programs; education & enrichment classes and job skills training to assist Houstonians. The center will feature an auditorium for social and cultural events for various community organizations to use throughout the year.
India House, Inc. received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the City of Houston, Housing and Community Development Department. The total project will cost $5.09 million. Other major donors include: Jindal Family, Houston Endowment, Fondren Foundation, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Brown Foundation, Indo-American Community & India Culture Center.
