GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER TAKES EVACUEES
Mayor White Authorizes Use of Entire Facility

September 3, 2005 -- The George R. Brown Convention Center has been designated as a temporary facility to house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. Mayor Bill White said the entire building will be used for the relief mission. The facility accepted about 200 people late Friday night.

Convention Center officials are working with the American Red Cross to ensure that preparations meet health and safety requirements.

"We want to use our resources in any way we can to help our neighbors through one of the greatest natural disaster in our nation's history," Mayor White said.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has partnered with the City of Houston to provide medical, nursing, dental and other professional health services to the evacuees through an emergency clinic at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

"It's our privilege and our duty to meet the urgent needs of our storm-driven neighbors from Louisiana and the Gulf Coast while also caring fro our Houston-area patients. We are proud to offer Mayor White and the City of Houston the best efforts of our faculty members, medical, residents, students and staff," said Michael D. McKinney, M.D., Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the UT Health Science Center.
