MAYOR BILL WHITE ANNOUNCES BIKE MONTH IN HOUSTON

Houston Bikeways On A RollApril 28, 2006 -- Mayor Bill White is challenging Houstonians to ride bicycles more during May, which will be observed as national bike month in Houston. By riding for fun, for fitness or for utilitarian purpose, Houston residents join other cities across the nation increasing awareness of cycling as an economical and effective way to get around, burning calories instead of gasoline.

The challenge offers several ways for Houstonians to ride their bike throughout the month, including riding to the park, to the library, to work, to school or just around the neighborhood. A pledge is available online at www.houstonbikeways.org under Bike Month 2006, along with a calendar of events around Houston.

On Monday, May 1, 2006, the City of Houston Bikeway Program presents a Bike Month Campaign kick-off and Holly Hall Trail ribbon-cutting at 2111 Holly Hall. The event begins at 9:30 am. Speakers include City of Houston Council Member Carol Alvarado and State Senator Rodney Ellis, with special guests City of Houston Council Member Ada Edwards for District D, and Teri Kaplan from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The ribbon-cutting of the Holly Hall Trail is the first addition of more urban trails to the existing 300-mile bikeway network. The Holly Hall Trail connects to the Ardmore bike route, the Cambridge bike lanes, and the Metro Rail at Fannin. The connections allow cyclists to extend their trip along designated bikeways or by using public transit.
