MAYOR BILL WHITE AND COUNCIL MEMBER TONI LAWRENCE CLEAN UP HILTON TOWN
June 6, 2006 -- Mayor Bill White and Council Member Toni Lawrence today toured the demolition conducted by the Neighborhood Protection Corps at the Hilton Town Complex located at 2201 Wirt, which is within the Spring Branch East Super Neighborhood.
"Safety is a big priority in this city," said Mayor Bill White. "We urge property owners to maintain buildings in a way that does not threaten the safety and well-being of our citizens."
The City of Houston will raze the final 23 dangerous buildings at the site. The 25-acre Hilton Town complex is adjacent to the Spring Branch Independent School District's pre-kindergarten Lion Lane School, located at 2210 Ridgecrest Drive, and the Landrum Middle School, 2200 Ridgecrest Drive.
"It is unacceptable for our community to have endured this blight and danger for so many years," Lawrence said. " I applaud my predecessor, Helen Huey, for initially launching this battle in 1992 and am extremely proud that my office and constituents remained vigilant and patient, navigating the very intricate and complex legal issues involved, to see this job completed."
Asbestos abatement contractors, AAR Incorporated, were contracted for this demolition at Hilton Town. The abatement cost will be $380,275 with asbestos monitoring cost of $48,800 for a total of $429,075. The City of Houston will place a lien against the properties to recover all costs associated with these services. Liens are paid when the property title is transferred and there is a change of ownership.
