MAYOR BILL WHITE TOUTS SAFECLEAR AS FREEWAY ACCIDENTS ARE REDUCED 20% IN FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF 2006
Compared to First Four Months '03/'04, before SafeClear

June 7, 2006 -- Houston Mayor Bill White, joined by Council Members Michael Berry and Adrian Garcia, today released accident statistics for City of Houston freeways for the first four months of 2006 as part of the of the SafeClear traffic incident management program. Compared to the average number of accidents in January through April of 2003 and 2004, the statistics indicate a 20% reduction in accidents on Houston area freeways covered by the program in which tow operators quickly respond to assist motorist with disabled and wrecked vehicles.

"The early results are remarkable," said Mayor White. "By quickly assisting stranded motorists, clearing accident sites and working with TXDOT to improve our roadways, we are making our freeways safer, reducing congestion and saving Houstonians time and money."

The program went into effect on freeways citywide on January 1, 2005.
