MAYOR BILL WHITE,
HPD's NEIGHBORHOOD PROTECTION KNOCK DOWN 86 MORE DANGEROUS BUILDINGS IN RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES
May 19, 2007 - Mayor Bill White and HPD's Neighborhood Protection Division today partnered with pre-certified contractors for the 3 rd "Demolition Day" in Houston. 86 dangerous and abandoned buildings are being knocked down during this weekend to highlight the City's commitment to protecting Houston's neighborhoods.
"Today's demolitions will rid neighborhoods of this blight and will help revitalize our communities," said Mayor White. "We are committed to getting rid of these dangerous abandoned homes and properties to make our neighborhoods safer."
In fiscal year 2006, the total number of demolitions was 831. Today's demolitions, most of which are in the Houston Hope neighborhoods, bring the total number of dangerous buildings demolished during the City's 2007 fiscal year (which ends June 30) to 662. The City expects to meet its goal of knocking down 750 dangerous buildings by the end of the fiscal year. A similar goal has been set for Fiscal 2008.
Mayor White thanked contractors participating in "Demolition Day" including: AAA Demolishing Co.; Cherry Demolishing Co.; Houston G & G Demolition; JTB Services; Smith-Mobley, Inc. and Willis Demolishing Co. Each contractor worked with Neighborhood Protection for the first year, and donated equipment and services for at least one demolition site.
