MAYOR BILL WHITE NAMED BY GOVERNING MAGAZINE ONE OF NATION'S PUBLIC OFFICIALS OF THE YEAR 2007

November 4, 2007 -- Mayor Bill White has joined Washington Governor Christine O. Gregoire, Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton and others as one of the recipients of Governing magazine's Public Official of the Year awards for 2007, given in recognition of outstanding achievement at the state and local level.

"Among our biggest priorities have been improving the quality of life for all Houstonians and making City Hall one of the most efficient and effective in the nation. This is wonderful recognition of the hard work that so many have put in to make progress on those goals. I am very honored and proud on behalf of the city," said Mayor White.

The winners also include the speaker of the California Assembly; the chief financial officer of Washington, D.C.; Charlotte, North Carolina's planning director; Missouri's deputy chief information officer; a longtime problem-solver in Virginia state government; and the director of the Wisconsin Bureau of Assisted Living.

"These individuals have each changed their governments for the better," said Alan Ehrenhalt, GOVERNING 's executive editor. "They have provided their organizations with something that was desperately needed-be it fiscal discipline, managerial skill or a commitment to bipartisan conciliation-and in doing so have improved the lives of their citizens. Public officials across the country can learn from their outstanding examples."

The award winners are profiled in the November issue of GOVERNING and at http://www.governing.com/poy/2007/index.htm. The winners will be honored at a dinner November 7 in Washington, D.C., hosted by the magazine . For more information from Governing magazine, contact Josh Goodman (202) 862-1439.
