MAYOR BILL WHITE TO NAME COUNCIL MEMBER ADA EDWARDS AS DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF FOR NEIGHBORHOODS

Ada EdwardsDecember 14, 2007 -- Mayor Bill White today announced that Council Member Ada Edwards will assume responsibilities as the Mayor's Deputy Chief of Staff for Neighborhoods. This position has been vacant since the departure of John Walsh, in 2006.

"The city of Houston has benefited tremendously from the leadership and knowledge of Ada Edwards. We want to continue to use her skills to make Houston better," said Mayor Bill White. "In this position, Ada will join a team helping to revitalize neighborhoods, increase affordable housing, support neighborhood organizations, schools and nonprofits that all enhance our quality of life."

The responsibilities for the office includes providing direction and support for Houston Hope and neighborhood revitalization projects, assisting in setting CDBG priorities, providing organizational support for Super Neighborhoods, promoting and preserving neighborhood schools, and working with non-profit organizations to improve Houston's offender reentry programs.

On Council, Edwards chaired the Flooding and Drainage; Housing and Development Committees and the HIV/AIDS Task Force. She is a published freelance writer and broadcast journalist. She serves on the Board of the Joint City County Commission on Children and Youth and the Advisory Board for Mothers for Clean Air.

Edwards will assume the duties of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Neighborhoods in January, following her departure from City Council.
