CITY OF HOUSTON, MICHAEL E. DeBAKEY VA MEDICAL CENTER HOST WELCOME HOME EVENT FOR VETERANS

July 29, 2009 -- Mayor Bill White and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center invite Houstonians to attend a Welcome Home Event for Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families who live in the Greater Houston Area.

The event will take place Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Houston Parks & Recreation Department’s Metropolitan Multi-Service Center located at 1475 West Gray St.

“Join us in showing our appreciation for the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans,” said Mayor Bill White.  “This event reminds us that military service can mean lifelong sacrifices for these men, women and their families.  It is our duty as citizens to welcome home those who have recently gone to war and to thank all veterans for their contributions.”

All veterans of the post-9/11 era, their families, community organizations, elected officials, local businesses and military supporters are invited to attend the free all-day event.  The event will also feature a resource fair for returning veterans and their families that focus on GI Bill and Hazelwood education benefits, employment networking and services, and mentoring program information.  Important updates will also be provided on VA healthcare, mental health, home loans, compensation, and pension benefits and entitlements.  In addition, food and entertainment will be provided.  For questions or to RSVP, please e-mail vhahouwelcomehome@va.gov or call (832) 393-0992 for further assistance.

If you would like to volunteer to help make this event a success, please contact John Boerstler at john.boerstler@cityofhouston.net.  For all inquiries regarding business or organizational sponsorship information or resource fair table information, please contact Fern Taylor at fern.taylor@va.gov.
