MUNICIPAL COURT PRESIDING JUDGE STEPS DOWN

February 5, 2010 -- Mayor Annise Parker has accepted the resignation of Municipal Courts Director and Presiding Judge Berta Mejia. “I want to thank Judge Mejia for her service to the citizens of Houston,” said Mayor Parker.  “Houston’s municipal court system is the largest of its kind in the State of Texas and one of the largest in the country.  This will be a challenging vacancy to fill.”

Mejia assumed the position of presiding judge in 1998.  Prior to that appointment, she served as first assistant city attorney in the city legal department. Mayor Parker has selected a three-member search committee to advise her on Mejia’s replacement.  Mejia has agreed to continue serving until a new presiding judge is selected.
