demolition begins at ella square apartments

December 6, 2010 -- District A Houston City Council Member Brenda Stardig announced the long-awaited demolition of Ella Square at 3011 Ella Boulevard in northwest Houston today at 3:00 p.m. The rundown multi-family complex has been cited numerous times for various safety violations by the City of Houston.

“Neighbors were diligent in utilizing the city’s 3-1-1 Service Helpline to make city authorities aware of the deplorable conditions at this complex,” said Stardig. “This demolition is a perfect example of how citizens can make a difference and achieve results by reporting concerns to 3-1-1.”

The property owner is voluntarily demolishing the complex which had been issued over than 25 citations by Houston Police Department Differential Response Team officers. The property had plumbing, electrical and structural issues as well as exposed raw sewage.

Council Member Stardig credits the HPD Environmental Squad, Public Works and Engineering Multi-family Habitability Unit, and the city’s legal department for addressing the issues at Ella Square in an aggressive and swift manner.

About 3-1-1 Service Helpline:

In August 2001 the City of Houston launched 3-1-1 Houston Service Helpline, a consolidated call center that provides citizens with one easy-to-remember telephone number for quick, reliable access to city services, 7 days a week, from 6 AM to 12 Midnight. The call center makes city government more accessible and responsive to city residents.

3-1-1 responds to citizens' non-emergency needs immediately and reduces the current 9-1-1 call load by providing an alternative for service calls.

3-1-1 has become recognized as an outstanding tool to enhance citizen access to government services. Governments across the United States are now forced to change the way they interact with constituents and constituents have new expectations from their government. The 3-1-1 Houston Service Helpline is proactively making every effort to meet those expectations.
