June 4, 2013 -- Residents living at Houston Housing Authority’s Kelly Village Apartments can expect to have a park right outside their front doors in a couple of months. Today, Mayor Annise Parker and the Houston Housing Authority completed the first step in creating a community park on the property by demolishing 63 vacant units, which were offline as a result of hurricane damage. Construction of the park is expected to begin this fall. When completed, the three-acre park will feature new playground equipment, jogging/walking trail, exercise stations and a community garden area.
Mayor Annise Parker took the first bulldozer swipe at the abandoned buildings. Mayor Parker welcomed the measures that the Housing Authority is taking to beautify its property and provide green space for the community.
“One of my favorite things to do is to take the first swipe at properties that need to come down so we can improve our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Parker. “Removing these apartments will rid Kelly Village of an eyesore while at the same time provide children in the are a place to play. I can’t think of a better outcome.”
Located in Fifth Ward, Kelly Village is a 333 unit apartment complex. The Housing Authority recently completed extensive renovations to the community center, lobby area and grounds at Kelly Village. The addition of the community park continues the Housing Authority’s commitment to providing its residents with quality housing.
“We want our residents to be proud to call Kelly Village their home,” said Houston Housing Authority President & CEO Tory Gunsolley. “With the addition of the park, residents and the wider community will have a nice place to exercise and relax.”
