Mayor Annise Parker Elected to C40 Steering Committee

August 22, 2013 -- Mayor Annise Parker has been elected to serve on the Steering Committee of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), an international network of the world’s largest cities taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“I am honored to serve as a Steering Committee member for the C40,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “Cities are the backbone of the effort to combat and prepare for climate change, and C40 is the pre-eminent global organization supporting city initiatives and programs to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks.”

The C40 Steering Committee has representation from each of C40’s seven regions to provide strategic oversight and ensure the organization’s mission and mandate are directly driven by, and responsive to, the needs of C40 cities. At present, Steering Committee membership is comprised of mayoral-level representation from: Berlin, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, New York, Seoul and Tokyo. The Steering Committee is led by an elected C40 Chair, who provides direct Mayoral leadership to the work of the C40, and serves as its formal global representative.

The current chair of C40 is New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg who leads the C40 together with the Steering Committee and executive leadership team.

“I look forward to sharing our sustainability initiatives and best practices, discussing challenges and opportunities, as well as learning from other cities’ experiences so that Houston, as well as our fellow C40 cities, can continue to successfully prepare for and take action to combat climate change,” said Mayor Parker.

C40 was created in 2005 by former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, and forged a partnership in 2006 with the Cities Program of President Clinton’s Climate Initiative (CCI) to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency in large cities across the world. Under the leadership of then Mayor of Toronto David Miller, who served after Mayor Livingstone as C40 Chair, the organization advanced programs and partnerships that drew international recognition for the role of cities as leaders in climate action
