Mayor Annise Parker Announces Houston Public Library Card Sign-Up Campaign Presented by H-E-B

September 10, 2014 -- Mayor Annise Parker today announced the Houston Public Library’s (HPL) MY Link Library Card Sign-Up Campaign. The Campaign begins today and continues through the next year, inviting Houstonians to renew their existing Library Card accounts or sign up for a new account. Parker was joined by HPL Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson and Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice-President, Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs, in unveiling the MY Link Library Card, powered by H-E-B.  The Campaign goal is to convert all existing Cardholders to the new MY Link Library Card and to increase total Cardholders to 1,000,000 children, teens, and adults.

“A library card is your link to the rest of the world and every child should have one,” said Mayor Parker.  “With the start of the new school year, I know students will have major projects and daily assignments to complete. Whether you have research to conduct for a term paper or simply want to delve into the latest bestseller, the Houston Public Library is the place to find it.”

H-E-B will provide funding to support this innovative way to capitalize on the vast resources of the library and ensure production of the one million cards.

“H-E-B has always held literacy and education close to the heart of its business and is proud to partner with the Houston Public Library to empower all Houstonians with free access to unprecedented opportunities for life-long learning and connecting,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice-President, Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. “MY LINK could easily be the vehicle to your next adventure, discovery, homework assignment or job offer.”

“The MY Link Library Card links you to more than six million books, e-books and audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, magazines, databases, and downloadable and streaming media, all for free,” said Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Houston Public Library director. “Thanks to the generosity and great support provided by our partner, H-E-B, we will be able to get a new MY Link Library Card into the hands of every student and thousands of Houstonians of all ages. We invite the community to join us at one of the My Link events to enjoy the festivities. Everyone who registers for a new card at the events on September 13th or 17th will be entered into a raffle to win an iPad mini!  As an added incentive, fines under $25.00 on overdue books will be forgiven from September 10- September 26! I have MY Link. Do you have yours?”

In an effort to get the MY Link Library Card into the hands of as many Houstonians as possible, HPL will waive fines under $25.00 for customers who register for a new MY Link Library Card from Wednesday, September 10th through Friday, September 26th, 2014.  Amnesty will apply to all accounts that are not already in the collection process.  Accruing fines for overdue items returned during the amnesty period will also be waived. This is HPL’s first full amnesty since 1978.
