Mayor Parker Announces Installment of “Citizenship Corner” at City Libraries
Department of Neighborhoods and Houston Public Library Partner with U.S. Citizenship
and Immigration Services to Provide Citizenship Information to Immigrants

September 17, 2015 -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker today announced the debut of “Citizenship Corner” information displays available at select City libraries.  Houston is one of eight cities that have entered into a formal agreement with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to raise public awareness about the steps required to become a U.S. citizen as well as the rights, responsibilities and importance of citizenship.

Citizenship Corner will be administered and curated by the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) and Houston Public Library (HPL).  The displays will provide legal permanent residents interested in applying for citizenship with free USCIS study materials and community resources.  These resources are also available online at www.citizenshipcorner.org

“Houston is the home of a significant number of legal permanent residents who are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship," said Mayor Parker.  "Our libraries are the perfect place for making official information readily available to this population. Citizenship Corner is about helping fellow Houstonians access the basic information they need for successful integration as contributing members of our community.”

“The Department of Neighborhoods is pleased to collaborate with the Houston Public Library and USCIS to ensure that Houstonians eligible to apply for citizenship have access to official materials so they can make informed decisions,” said Katye Tipton, DON Director.  “We also want to alert these residents about immigration services scams and direct them to legitimate, trusted agencies that can assist them. Citizenship Corner is one more way in which our department is reaching out to diverse communities to better serve all residents.”

“HPL is excited to be part of the City of Houston and the USCIS Citizenship Corner initiative,” said Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Houston Public Library Director.  “We will help provide the immigrant community with the necessary materials they need to become U. S. citizens, including access to our computer labs available in all of our neighborhood libraries. HPL wants to make a positive impact and a difference in the quality of life not just for all immigrants but for everyone in the community.”

“USCIS is proud to join Mayor Parker and the City of Houston in providing immigrants with greater access to information and resources as they pursue their ultimate goal of full membership in our society as U.S. citizens,” USCIS Director León Rodríguez said. “We look forward to working with the Department of Neighborhoods and Houston Public Library in providing everything that’s needed to help immigrants become part of a welcoming and robust Houston.”

Today’s announcement coincides with the observance of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
