Grants Support Volunteer-Led Street Block Revitalization

April 18, 2012 -- Houston Mayor Annise Parker announces Love Your Block, a new grant program designed to encourage volunteers to implement street block improvement and beautification projects in their neighborhoods.  The grant program is part of Houston SERVICE under the Mayor’s Volunteer Initiatives Program in the Department of Neighborhoods.

“We are very excited about these new grants that will help Houston residents transform street blocks into attractive open spaces,” said Mayor Parker.  “The grant program taps one of the city’s greatest resources--our strong volunteer base.  This is an opportunity for residents to work together to beautify their surroundings and build a stronger sense of neighborhood pride and ownership.”

Love Your Block grants will support 20 volunteer-driven block improvement projects led by nonprofit organizations in 2012.  Grantee groups will receive a $500 gift card from Home Depot for the purchase of supplies and equipment necessary to implement the projects.  City of Houston community partner Keep Houston Beautiful will support the projects by providing tools, supplies and other resources to offset costs.  A grants review committee will provide guidance to align funded projects with existing City priorities.

The grant application deadline is May 11, 2012.  Applicant groups must have nonprofit status.  Eligible groups include neighborhood, tenant and block associations as well as community garden clubs and church-based organizations.  Funded projects must be implemented between June 1 and December 31, 2012.
