MWBE Manager - Small Business and Education Outreach
Akilah Hicks is responsible for providing direction and input on policy and guidelines for the Port of Houston Authority’s Business Equity initiative. In her current role as MWBE Manager, Akilah serves as a subject-matter expert on Small Business Enterprise (SBE), Historically Underutilized Business (HUB), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), and Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) programs. Akilah has over 17 years of service in the public sector and serves as the Port’s liaison to a network of individuals and local, state, and national organizations regarding MWBE-related programs. Akilah began her pursuit and work to build the capacity of local small, minority, and woman owned businesses through business plan development, grant writing and administration. She began service at the Port of Houston Authority in 2014, and previously worked in Grant Program Administration at Harris County. Her acumen in economic inclusion and MWBE programs earned her the opportunity to serve on various boards and committees for agencies including the Houston Minority Supplier Development Council and Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance. Her passion is for cultivating business culture and working with community-based organizations to contribute to the development of the MWBE business community – actively and positively – in the Greater Houston area.
