The Houston Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains 38 outdoor swimming pools for the enjoyment of Houstonians of all ages. In addition, the Adaptive Recreation Division operates a heated indoor natatorium for citizens with disabilities to get exercise, physical therapy, and recreation, located at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray.
In 2008, the swim season opens May 24 and runs through the Labor Day weekend. Certain pools will continue to operate on a reduced-hours basis during the fall.
The pools are staffed by American Red Cross-certified lifeguards. They are responsible for keeping pool visitors safe, managing the size of the crowds at the pool and maintaining the water's chemical balance.
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department and the American Red Cross will offer swimming classes for children and adults this summer. For sites and registration information, please visit the Learn To Swim page.
