OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOLS & WATER SPRAYGROUNDS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department (H.P.A.R.D.) operates and maintains 37 outdoor swimming pools and 24 water spraygrounds. Houston’s outdoor swimming pools are open during the summer months. All pools are free and open to all ages; however, children under 8 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Summer Pool Schedule
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department will open 33 pool sites at the beginning of the 2015 summer pool season.
Emancipation Park Pool will be closed for the 2015 summer pool season as it is currently under renovation. Three other pool sites, DeZavala Park Pool, George T. Nelson Park Pool and Tuffly Park Pool, will open later in the summer. We apoolgize for the inconvenience and invite you to visit these alternate sites until your neighborhood pool re-opens:

METROPOLITAN MULTI-SERVICE CENTER INDOOR POOL

H.P.A.R.D. operates a heated indoor natatorium for citizens with disabilities at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray. The 5-lane, 25-yard heated pool is fully accessible by wheelchair and is equipped with a zero depth entry ramp, hand rails, and three chair lifts. Changing and shower facilities are available adjacent to the pool area. Participants are required to have independent functioning mobility skills or bring an adult attendant to assist.

What to Wear
Appropriate swim-wear is required – No cut-offs, shorts, T-shirts, or thongs. The City of Houston’s policy prohibits the wearing of T-shirts in swimming pools unless an exemption letter has been accepted and filed in our Aquatics Office. Exemptions are granted based on medical and/or religious reasons, for the wearing of plain white T-shirts only.

For the Kids
Children under 8 must be accompanied in the pool by a parent or an adult. Swim diapers are required for infants and babies.No flotation devices, such as floaties and inflatables, are permitted.

What Not to Do
No smoking is alllowed. No eating and drinking is allowed, except in designated areas. No beverages or alcohol in glass containers are permitted. No excessively loud music is permitted.

2015 SUMMER WATER FITNESS

Cool off this summer with FREE water fitness classes! Water fitness is a great exercise for any age, any fitness level, and any body type. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department offers classes at three levels of intensity at pools across the city. No fee is charged. All enrollments are filled on a “first come, first served” basis. Classes are limited to a maximum of 20 participants per class at most pool sites. (Water Fitness Classes Flier)

H2OSafe

H.P.A.R.D. offers free learn to swim classes for youth through the H2OSafe program. Classes are accessible to all and are offered at various skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each session meets Tuesday through Friday for two weeks (30 minute class).

H2OSAFE CLASSES DESCRIPTION
H2OSafe Basics: Level 1

For ages 6 to 13 years
Prerequisite: None
In H2OSafe Basics: Level 1, your child will learn to swim a basic Freestyle Stroke through a drill-oriented approach, coupled with unique skill progressions for the following:  First-time Submersion, Breath Holding, Breath Control, Front Kicking, Back Kicking, In-line Kicking, Paddle Stroke, and Freestyle without side breathing.

H2OSafe Swim Strokes: Level 2

For ages 6 to 13 years
Prerequisite:  To enroll in H2OSafe Swim Strokes: Level 2, your child should be able to comfortably swim 15-20 feet without the aid of a flotation device AND with the face in the water.

In H2OSafe Swim Strokes: Level 2, your child will learn how to swim the formal strokes of Freestyle with Side Breathing and Backstroke. The Freestyle Side Breathing skill may be the most important skill one learns in the learn-to-swim process. This class is drill-oriented with unique skill progressions for the following:  Kicking with the Kickboard, Back Kicking, Streamline Kicking, Backstroke, and Freestyle. 

H2OSafe Advanced Swim Strokes: Level 3

For ages 6 to 13 years
Prerequisite:  To enroll in H2OSafe Advanced Swim Strokes: Level 3, your child must be able to swim 25 feet of Backstroke and Freestyle with the Side Breathing.

In H2OSafe Advanced Swim Strokes: Level 3, your child will learn the advanced skills of Breaststroke and Butterfly, as well as refine and further develop the Freestyle and Backstroke; all classes are drill and technique-oriented.  In this course your child will practice the following skills each lesson: Freestyle & Backstroke (minimal work for refinement purposes), Breaststroke Kick (Whip Kick), Breaststroke Arm Stroke, Breaststroke (Kick & Stroke Timing), Body Dolphin Butterfly Kick, Butterfly Arm Stroke, and Butterfly (Kick & Stroke Timing).
