George Hermann Statue (Gragg Park)
Title: George Hermann Statue (Gragg Park)
Artist: Enrico Filiberto Cerrachio
Location: Gragg Park
Enrico Filiberto Cerrachio created the seated statue of George Hermann in 1943. It is displayed in the lobby of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department headquarters in Gragg Park. The plaque on the pedestal declares that it was presented to the city “In Memory of George H. Hermann, Philanthropist, by the Schoolchildren of Houston and the Lions Club of Houston.”
Cerrachio was born in Italy in 1880 and studied in the Institute Avellino. He immigrated to the United States in 1900, settling in Houston, and became a U.S. citizen in 1905. He worked largely in bronze and marble, creating many sculptures of historical figures. Besides the George Hermann sculpture, Houstonians will immediately recognize his Sam Houston equestrian statue in Hermann Park. He died in 1956.
