Athletes Seeking Knowledge (A.S.K.)
The primary goal of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s Athletes Seeking Knowledge Program (A.S.K.) is to mold better student-athletes by providing the necessary tools, guidance and support for their academic success. Through sports and recreation the program engages middle school and high school students (ages 13 – 18) and helps them stay focused on their education. In addition, A.S.K., with the financial support of its sponsors, provides free resources such as tutorials, ACT and SAT testing, university tours and a variety of educational contests and activities that encourage education awareness and excellence. The program is FREE of charge and is offered by the Department as part of its After School, Teen and Summer Enrichment Programs.
Scholarship Awards
The program’s yearly highlight is the A.S.K. Scholarship Gala where achievement scholarships are awarded to deserving participants. (need elgibility information) Since its inception in 2001, the A.S.K. program has awarded over $70,000.00 in scholarships and awards to deserving participants.
Some 2009 A.S.K. scholarship recipients are currently attending the University of Texas at Austin, Dartmouth College, Stephen F. Austin State University, Houston Community College, Colby Community College and the University of Houston.
A portion of the proceeds from the Annual Father/Child Charity Golf Tournament coordinated by Dr. Norm Berkman and generous donors provide funding for A.S.K. Scholarships.
