BALDWIN PARK REDEDICATION

Baldwin Park RededicationAn old park in midtown has a beautiful new look.  Elizabeth Baldwin Park, located at 1701 Elgin, in the heart of the city, was acquired in 1905 and is blessed with numerous oak trees dating from that period.

The establishment of the Midtown Management District formed a body dedicated to directing infrastructure improvements for the area using a portion of the tax revenue generated there.  Elizabeth Baldwin Park is just one of their successes, but it is a very visible one.

Under the direction of the Management District, with oversight from Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the park has been revitalized for the Twenty-first Century with new plantings, lighting, and parking, but the improvements that will please the neighbors the most are new playground equipment, picnic and chess tables, and the beautiful new Vietnamese Heritage Pavilion.  This roofed structure celebrates the success of the Vietnamese community in Houston and greets visitors in many different languages.

The renovation of Elizabeth Baldwin Park was unveiled to the public on Monday, November 13, 2006.  The crowd was serenaded by a choir from J. Will Jones Elementary School, which is across Elgin from the park.  The ceremony was emceed by the Midtown Management District's Cynthia Alvarado, and included Council Members Ada Edwards and Peter Brown, State Representatives Garnet Coleman and Hubert Vo, State Senator Rodney Ellis, HPARD Director Joe Turner, and the Midtown Management District's Robert D. Sellingsloh and Nicole P. Cao.
