The area in Hermann Park long known as the Houston Garden Center has been transformed into the McGovern Centennial Gardens. The renovated grounds are still home to a rose garden and all the artwork familiar to visitors to the Garden Center. New amenities include an interactive family garden, an arid garden, a pine walk, a woodland garden, and a spectacular 30-foot high garden mount, complete with a spiral trail to its summit. The Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion anchors the site.
The McGovern Centennial Gardens opened to the public on December 22, 2014. The Gardens were designed by Hoerr Schaudt, a Chicago landscape architecture firm working in collaboration with Houston’s White Oak Studio, with Dr William C. Welch of Texas A&M University consulting. The Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion was designed by architect Peter Bohlin of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Tellepsen is the contractor on the project.
