Since 1984, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department has sponsored The Summer Food Service Program for youth. Through this program young people ages 1 to 18 receive FREE nutritious lunches for 12 weeks during the time that school is out of session. This is a federally funded program coordinated by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission-Special Nutrition Programs.
Lunches are served Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a healthy snack served between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Houston Parks and Recreation Department Community Centers and at other participating locations including churches, apartment complexes, learning centers and other non-profit organizations.
Interested in becoming a Summer Food Service Program Site? Here's what you need to do:
Before the program begins, complete and return a 2008 Request to Participate Form. The form can be obtained from the Department's Summer Food Service Program Office or on line.
Participate in a Site Selection Visit to determine that site locations have the facilities to provide meal service for the anticipated number of participants in attendance and the capability to conduct the proposed meal service.
Site Staff must attend a Site Supervisor's Training Session before the Summer Food Service operation begins. A manual is provided.
Participate in continuing Site Visits by the Summer Food Service Staff throughout the programs operation. These visits are conducted at least once during the first week to ensure a smooth operation and verify information. Site visits are also performed unannounced by City and State officials.
Sites are reviewed by Summer Food Service Staff at least once during the first 4 weeks of program operation to review and discuss its progress.
The Summer Food Service Program is FREE for youth. Site Supervisors maintain accurate records of meals that are served. No billing or food preparation is involved.
