Alarm Detail -- False Alarm Prevention Information

This information is designed to help the alarm user assist the local police department in reducing the instances of false alarms.

Why are False Alarms a Problem?

False alarms cost the alarm user $$$. More importantly, they divert valuable police resources from real life emergencies.

What Causes False Alarms?

In depth research has shown that the three majors causes of false alarms are:

  • Most false alarms are: User errors
  • Some are related to: Installation or service errors
  • Few are related: Equipment failure

What Can the Alarm User do to Help Prevent False Alarms?

  • Make sure that all authorized alarm users are thoroughly trained in using the system.
  • Be sure to check for items that can move in view of your motion detector, causing false alarms (i.e. fans, plants, animals, window dressings and hanging signs).
  • Secure and lock all doors and windows before arming your system.
  • Allow adequate time to exit the door prior to the alarm system activating.
  • Advise all alarm users and your monitoring companies of any pass code changes.
  • Immediately notify your monitoring company of contact number or name changes.
  • If you believe your system is not working properly, immediately contact your service provider.
  • Service and maintain your system minimally once a year (including backup batteries) before false alarms occur.
  • Inform your alarm company of any remodeling that is done to the property where the alarm is installed.
  • Upgrade old alarm systems to current equipment that conforms to Security Industry Association (SIA) false alarm prevention standards, which has an upgraded program that reduces false alarms.
  • Call or wait to be called by your monitoring company to cancel all false alarms, since they do not need emergency response.

What If My Alarm Goes Off Accidentally?

  • Do not panic. Remember your alarm code.
  • Determine if there is a real life emergency.
  • If the alarm activation was accidental, carefully enter the pass code to disarm your system without delay.
  • Know your alarm company’s dispatching procedures. You may have to wait for a call or make the call to the dispatch center yourself. Coordinate this with your alarm company before using your system.
  • Be prepared to identify yourself with your password or abort code number. Without this information your alarm company MUST dispatch.
  • Do not leave the alarm site until the situation is resolved and the alarm is canceled.
