The down-turn in the economy significantly increased our applicant numbers. As a result, we are experiencing a high volume of applications which is resulting in longer processing time. We apologize for any inconvenience and ask that you remain patient.

We have two classes of 70 cadets each scheduled to begin on March 29, 2010 and May 24, 2010. Applicants who have not been in for an interview yet will be in the pool of applicants for classes to be held in Fiscal Year 2011, which runs from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. Class dates and numbers have not yet been determined.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Application Process for Police Trainees

Meet ALL HPD Requirements for the Police Trainee position listed on this career web site. Contact the HPD Human Resources Division at (713) 308-1300 or 800-252-0473 if you have any questions.

HPD Requirements

  • Has either (1) completed sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university with a “2.0” average or (2) military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Applicants with five (5) full years of active law enforcement experience are exempt from education and military service requirements.
  • Age: 21 - 44 years of age, but must not have reached their 45th birthday prior to oath of office or certification.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a comprehensive background investigation. Consideration given for military, overseas assignments.
  • Weight in proportion to height.
  • Pass all phases of the Work Sample Test (physical agility).
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.
  • No more than (2) moving traffic violations within an eighteen (18) month period preceding the date of application. Driving record should reflect prudence and maturity.
  • No felony or Class A misdemeanor convictions. No class B misdemeanor convictions within the past ten years preceding the date of application.
  • Previous military personnel must not have been convicted of any court-martial higher than a summary.
  • Have a stable credit history, family background, and employment background.

The Selection Process

The selection process may take several weeks. All applicants must successfully pass each of the following phases in order to qualify for the academy:

  • Applicants meet all HPD Requirements
  • Registration is held
  • Applicants are interviewed
  • A Physical Agility Testis passed
  • A Polygraph Examination is administered
  • A Final Interview is held
  • Fingerprints & Photos are taken
  • Background Investigation is conducted
  • A Medical Examination & Drug Testing is done
  • A Psychological Testing & Evaluation is performed

Department also reimburses police officers for cost of additional eligible college hours.

OVERTIME
Additionally, an average officer is paid between $9,315 - $12,936 per year in overtime.
