Incident at 6700 West Airport

December 5, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in the 6700 block of West Airport Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. today (Dec. 5).

The victim is identified as Eric James Smith, 34, of 12500 Sandpiper Drive. He was a Hurricane Katrina survivor from New Orleans. Smith suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant E. Gonzalez and Officer R. Martinez reported:

Mr. Smith was fatally shot as he walked in the 6700 block of West Airport. It is believed he had been at a gas service station at 6690 West Airport shortly before he was shot. Smith might have been robbed of his vehicle somewhere outside the service station, but this has not yet been confirmed. At this time, there is no information on the vehicle Smith was driving or what vehicle the suspect(s) was in.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
