Incident at 301 Benmar

July 5, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating the near drowning of a nine-year-boy at 301 Benmar about 5:35 p.m. on Monday (July 4).

The victim, Eloy Sierra, was first transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in critical condition and then to Memorial Hermann Hospital via Life Flight helicopter.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant G. Gonzales and Officer K. Carr reported:

Witnesses said Eloy had been swimming and playing in an apartment complex pool with three other kids, ranging in age from nine to 11. The investigators learned that a 21-year-old woman who lives at the apartment complex was in the pool and supervising the kids. She was also caring for her 17-month-old baby. The kids were playing with a football in the deep end of the pool while the woman was in the shallow end with her baby.

At some point, the kids found Eloy at the bottom of the pool. They pulled him from the water and notified the woman, who shouted for help and called an ambulance.

The investigation is continuing.
