Update on Incident at 5826 Conley

July 15, 2005 -- Houston police homicide investigators have identified a suspect wanted and charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 5826 Conley about 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday (July 13).

The suspect, Jason Ernest Vargas (b/m, DOB 2-19-87), is charged with murder in the 180th State District Court. He is wanted in the killing of Ronald Samuel Ray Steward, 48, of 3700 Burkett. Steward suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. A photo of suspect Vargas is attached to this news release.

The suspects were initially described as two black males. Investigators had released a composite sketch of one of the suspects. That suspect was located and it has been determined he was not connected to the shooting.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants B. Harris and T.C. Bloyd reported:

Steward had his cell phone stolen from him several days ago. Since then, he managed to track down the person who had the phone and agreed to pay that person a $125 reward for its return. The cell phone was returned to Steward on Wednesday morning, but he was unable to pay the reward. A scuffle broke out and Vargas shot Steward.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jason Ernest Vargas is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
