HPD Seeks Police Officer Trainees

November 7, 2005 -- On Wednesday, December 7, 2005 the Houston Police Department and the City of Houston will administer the 2005 Civil Service Examination for Police Officer Trainees at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Exhibit Hall B at 10 a.m.

Applicants must first register to take the exam no later than Friday, November 18, 2005 by 4:30 p.m. at the City of Houston Human Resources Office, 611 Walker, ground level.

Applicants can drop off their completed forms Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Application forms can be downloaded from the City of Houston website at www.houstontx.gov/police/careers.htm. Applicants who live outside Houston may register online.

Here are some other details about the application process:

- Applicants must have sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university with a 2.0 GPA or above in a 4.0 system (or the equivalent) or military service with an honorable discharge as stipulated on a DD214

- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the end of their probationary period and less than forty-five (45) years of age before receiving the oath of office.

-Passing applicants will be referred to the Houston Police Department to continue processing. Any falsification in the application process will result in disqualification.

-Applicants must pass all phases of the recruiting process

First year officers can earn up to $46,000 including benefits, equipment allowance, shift differential pay, weekend pay, a bachelor's degree and bilingual pay. For those considering a career change or who just want to serve the community, this is an excellent opportunity to apply.
