Incident at 8118 Martin Luther King Blvd

November 20, 2005 -- Charges have been filed against a suspect in the fatal shooting on a man about 11:45 a.m. at 8118 Martin Luther King Boulevard on Saturday (Nov. 19).

The suspect, Maurice J. Long-Edwards (b/m, DOB 12/12/72), has been charged with murder in the 178th State District Court. He is accused in the shooting of Johnny Ray Davis, 51, of 5638 Belarbor.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W.P. Booth and Officer J.C. Bonaby III reported:

The suspect entered the convenience store at 8118 Martin Luther King Boulevard and got into an altercation with the victim, Johnny Davis, who was an employee of the store. The suspect, Long-Edwards, left the location but returned later and shot Davis once in the chest. The store clerk who witnessed the shooting of Davis fired at the armed suspect, striking him twice. HPD officers arrived and took control of the situation by subduing an armed Long-Edwards and disarming the store clerk. Johnny Ray Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. Long-Edwards was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with several gunshot wounds.

The investigation is continuing.
