Chief Hurtt Issues Warning to Would Be Lawbreakers

September 21, 2005 -- Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt has issued a stern warning to anyone who would take advantage of the pending emergency situation facing the City of Houston. Specifically, Chief Hurtt warns that looting will not be tolerated and that violators will be prosecuted to the highest extent allowed by law.

The Houston Police Department wants to assure all citizens that law enforcement officers will be out in force and fully mobilized during the duration of this emergency. "We are ready to deal with any situation," says Chief Hurtt. Citizens who remain in the community are urged to contact the department in an emergency by calling 911. For non-emergency calls, the police department may be reached by calling 713-884-3131. Other city departments may be contacted by calling the City of Houston's Help Line at 311.

As always, the dedicated men and women of the Houston Police Department stand ready to serve the citizens of Houston and do whatever necessary to protect their lives and property.
