Update on Incident at 716 Fenell

March 30, 2006 -- Charges have been filed against two suspects wanted in the fatal shooting of a man at 716 Fenell about 1:10 a.m. on March 25.

The suspects are identified as Roberto Arredondo (H/m, DOB 1-1-85) and Raphael Garza Duenez (H/m, DOB 1-23-83). Duenez also uses an alias of Jair Alejandro Salas. Both are charged with capital murder in the 262nd State District Court.

The victim, Gary Wayne Zachary, 30, suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and back and was pronounced dead at Ben Taub General Hospital.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants E. Gonzalez, B. Harris and Officers R. Chappell and T. McCorvey reported:

Mr. Zachary was shot inside one of three houses located at 716 Fenell. Investigators determined the house located at the rear of the lot was being used to manufacture and sell narcotics and that the shooting was likely the result of a home invasion. According to witnesses, two Hispanic male suspects entered the residence and demanded money. A struggle between Zachary and the suspects ensued and he was shot. Zachary sought help at a neighbor's residence and was transported to the hospital. The suspects jumped into a four-door compact vehicle and fled.

One of the males, Arredondo, was being treated for a gunshot wound to the back at Methodist Hospital. Officers took a witness statement from him at the hospital. It's believed he was shot during the struggle inside the home on Fenell. Once investigators had enough evidence to pursue charges and identify Arredondo and Duenez as suspects, the investigators learned Arredondo had left Methodist Hospital on Wednesday (Mar. 29) with an IV still in his arm.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of suspects Arredondo and Duenez is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
