Incident at 7803 Long Point

October 6, 2006 -- Charges are pending against four suspects arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 7803 Long Point about 1:35 a.m. today (Oct 6).

The suspects are identified as John Mendez (H/m, DOB 6-6-88), Juan Jose Escobedo (H/m, DOB 9-27-81), Delicia C. Limon (H/f, DOB 11-6-86) and a juvenile male. Capital murder charges are pending against Mendez and the juvenile suspect, who will be referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation officials on that charge. Escobedo and Limon are facing charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

All four suspects are accused for their roles in the fatal shooting of James Curtis Newsome, 26. He suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead at Ben Taub General Hospital.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant S.R. Kennedy and Officer T.W. Miller reported:

The suspects planned on robbing Mr. Newsome after seeing he had more than $100 on him. Mendez and the juvenile suspect were armed and approached Newsome demanding his money. When Newsome refused, Mendez shot him while the juvenile suspect held a shotgun on Newsome.

The suspects then fled in a waiting vehicle and were pursued by HPD patrol officers. Officers located all four suspects hiding in a vacant apartment. Mendez was found in possession of a 9 mm pistol when he was taken into custody.
