Traffic Incident at 5600 Langley

October 10, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 5600 Langley about 11:50 a.m. on Monday (Oct. 9).

The identity of the deceased male has not been released pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant G.T. Hall and Officer R.
Newton reported:

An on-duty HPD patrol officer observed a Ford Taurus run a stop sign at a high rate of speed and being driven in an unsafe manner. The officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle and was at least one-half mile behind the reckless driver when that driver drove to the left of the center line and was struck head-on by an oncoming Toyota 4-Runner. The driver of the 4-runner, a male in his 70s, was transported to LBJ Hospital with apparent minor injuries. The reckless driver was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear as to why the driver of the Taurus was driving in such an unsafe manner or why he fled from the officer.

The investigation is continuing.
