Traffic Incident at South Shepherd and Westheimer

September 28, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at South Shepherd and Westheimer about 10:35 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 27).

The identities of the two deceased victims, a man and a female, are pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant D.S. Runyan and Officer M.E. Wick reported:

Witnesses reported seeing a Mercedes Benz traveling westbound on Westheimer at a high rate of speed and run the red light at South Shepherd. The Mercedes crashed into a Pontiac Firebird which was northbound on South Shepherd, killed the passenger of the Pontiac. The driver of the Mercedes and his passenger were transported to an area hospital with undetermined injuries where the driver submitted a mandatory blood sample. Alcohol may have been a factor.

The investigation is continuing.
